The Paleo Diet, short for Paleolithic Diet, is a diet plan based on foods similar to what might have been eaten during the Paleolithic era, which dates from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. The Paleo formula consists of meats, vegetables, nuts, seeds, some fruit and no refined sugar. The idea behind the Paleo Diet is that eating unprocessed foods that are closer to those consumed by early humans may lead to improved health and weight loss.
A typical Paleo diet includes lean meats like beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, and pork, along with fish and seafood such as salmon and shellfish. It also features eggs and a variety of vegetables like broccoli, kale, peppers, onions, carrots, and tomatoes. Fruits such as apples, bananas, oranges, and berries are included, along with nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds. Healthy fats from sources like olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil are also part of the diet.
Foods typically avoided in a Paleo diet include grains like wheat, oats, barley, and rice, as well as products made from these grains like bread, pasta, and cereal. Legumes such as beans, lentils, peanuts, and peas are also excluded. Dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy items are not typically part of the diet. Refined sugar and sugary beverages, as well as processed foods and refined vegetable oils, are also avoided.
